AMAZING BENEFITS OF CLOVES (Kanafuru - Yoruba)(Botanical Name-Syzygium aromaticum)

Cloves have been used to boost food flavor for hundreds of years. But somewhere behind their sweet and spicy taste hides a wide array of nutrients you can benefit from. 

Clove (Syzygium aromaticum) is one of the most loved and well-utilized spices in the entire world. Its distinct sweet and spicy aroma lends dishes and pastries a unique depth in flavor that you can pinpoint once you take a bite.

Cloves are the small flowering buds which are one of the main spice ingredient. Cloves are the dried flower buds of the Syzygium aromaticum tree, an evergreen that grows up to about 30 feet. Its name originates from the Latin word "clavus," which means "nail," because of the shaft and head. 


Like other spices, the story of how cloves were distributed throughout the world spans over hundreds of years, starting with the establishment of the trade routes. Together with pepper, cinnamon and hazelnut, cloves were among the spices that were highly sought-after in both Europe and the Americas, especially by noblemen. These four spices were known to be the "Big Four" because of their rarity and value.

They are a traditional spice but are more commonly used in traditional medicine such as agbo or  aseje, this is more common in Yoruba speaking areas. Most market 👭 Women call cloves Zobo pepper😀. Cloves are widely used in Asian, African and Middle-east cuisines in the cooking of curries, gravy items and marinades.

👉Closes are used in raw and dried form in the cooking of Biryanis, Fried rice and many more.

The spice is used as a type of cigarette too.

Cloves and its extracts are also used as insect and ant repellent.

👉The oil extracted from clove is also used as cosmetics and in the healing of many disorders.

👉Herbal tea or Green tea often includes some extract of clove in it due to its healing properties.

👉Cloves are increasingly now added to traditional soups and stews for their aromatic properties. They are actually dried flower buds with a distinctive sweet smell and a strong pungent (bitter) taste. They can be purchased as whole buds or ground/powdered form. Can be used to bake and also used in soups (pepper soup) and other savoury meat dishes. Also added to suya spice.

You must have observed, many of the toothpaste and dental products contains some extracts of clove in it. Clove is very good for tooth; we will see this in the following points;

👉If suffering from root decay, tooth decay or toothache then must use clove oil.Clove oil can be used as a natural painkiller for toothaches. This is because of its natural anesthetic property that helps alleviate pain and discomfort that arise from cavities and other dental and gum problems. It is very good and cures mouth 👄 disorder easily.

Include clove in your daily diet; it not only makes your teeth healthier but is also good for gums and cures foul smell.

✅Air freshener. For a more natural and safer alternative to chemical-based fresheners, you can make your own all-natural air deodorizer with oranges and cloves. Boil orange peels with a few pieces of cloves in water and let it simmer. The scent will get rid of uninvited smells and pungent odors in your home.13

👉You can also put a few pieces of cloves inside a clean sock and use it to freshen up musty closets and drawers. It will leave your clothes smelling sweet and fresh.

✅Used as An Aphrodisiac👫

Cloves aren’t just great for your physical health, there’s evidence it might also boost your sexual prowess. In ancient Umami medicine, clove was administered to increase a person’s virility. Modern studies have shown that cloves can increase a man’s testosterone levels, therefore boosting his sex drive.

The following doses have been studied in scientific research.

👉In men, to keep from reaching orgasm too early (premature ejaculation): A multi-ingredient cream preparation containing clove flower plus Panax ginseng root, Angelica root, Cistanches deserticola, Zanthoxyl species, Torlidis seed, Asiasari root, Cinnamon bark, and Toad venom (SS Cream) applied to the glans penis one hour before intercourse and washed off immediately before intercourse

✅For Skin disorders-

Clove oil has been found highly beneficial for acne, scars and any kind of bacterial infection. 👉It should be applied on the affected area twice a day.

Clove should be used in regular practice as it is rich in antioxidants, making your skin healthy and blemish-free.

Clove oil is also good to treat scabies, stings, rashes and other fungal infections.

✅For Asthma-

Apart from Asthma; we will also talk about other respiratory disorders cure;

👉In case of sinusitis, take clove powder oon your nose and in your diet too. It works immensely.

👉For Asthma, take equal quantities of clove, flowers of madar, black salt and black pepper.

Make pea sized tablets and tell the patient to slowly suck it.

It cures the disorder and also cleanses the respiratory tract.

✅For Eye problems-

Grind cloves in a copper vessel and mix with pure honey.

Use the solution as eyeliner.

It cures seasonal problems of eyes and stye too.

✅ For Nausea-

Grind dried cloves with warm water.

Give this to the patient ; it cures anxiety and thirst.

✅ As an Appetizer-

Take equal quantities of cloves and small pepper.

👉Seive them through a cloth and prepare fine powder.

Give 2 gm of this powder twice a day with honey.

It cures digestive weakness and fever too.

✅For Indigestion-

Take 10 gm solid powder of cloves and put in 1/2 litre of boiling water.

Cover it and strain the solution after 1/2 hour.

Give 25-50 ml of this water to the patient; twice to thrice a day.

It cures indigestion and also strengthens the digestive system.

✅For abdominal disorders-

Grind 1-2 cloves in solid form and then boil in 100 ml water till 20-25 ml is left.

Strain the solution and let it cool.

Give this to the patient. It is also useful in cholera.

Give hot infusion of cloves or clove oil in case of swelling in stomach.

It helps to cure the accumulation of wind in stomach.

✅For Whooping cough-

Roast 3-4 cloves in fire and then grind them.

Give this powder with honey to the patient.

It cures whooping-cough in the practice of few doses itself.

✅For Burning sensation-

Grind 2-4 cloves in cold water.

Give this to the patient with sugar mixed in it.

It cures acidity and problems similar to that.

✅For Migraine-

Grind 6 gm cloves in water.

Heat the paste then apply it on earlobes.

It cures the migraine

✅As an expectorant-

Take 2 gm powder of cloves and boil it in 125 ml of water till the water is reduced to 1/4th.

Strain the solution and give this to the patient to be drunk.

It dilutes the phlegm and helps it easy release.

Clove in very beneficial in such disorders.

So, in this way we saw numerous benefits for such a small ingredient. It is a very good thing and effective remedy for many diseases. Especially, during the monsoons and rainy; the use of clove seems to be very effective.


While you can store them in glass containers, make sure that cloves do not get exposed to direct light or intense heat. Direct light and heat can make the cloves lose their flavor and color, while steam can make them moist and cake together. Place cloves, as well as other spices, in drawers or storage cabinets that are far from the stove but close enough to be accessible

❌❌Side Effects & Safety❌❌

Clove seems LIKELY SAFE for most people when taken by mouth in food amounts. Not enough is known about the safety of taking clove by mouth in larger medicinal amounts. 

Clove oil or cream containing clove flower is POSSIBLY SAFE when applied to the skin. However, frequent and repeated application of clove oil in the mouth or on the gums can sometimes cause damage to the gums, tooth pulp, skin, and mucous membranes.

Inhaling smoke from clove cigarettes or injecting clove oil into the veins is LIKELY UNSAFE and can cause side effects such as breathing problems and lung infections.

Dried clove can also cause mouth sensitivity and irritation, as well as damage to dental tissues.

Special Precautions & Warnings:

❌Children: In children, clove oil is LIKELY UNSAFE to take by mouth. It can cause severe side effects such as seizures, liver damage, and fluid imbalances.

❌Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Clove is LIKELY SAFE when taken by mouth in food amounts. There is not enough reliable information about the safety of taking clove in medicinal doses if you are pregnant or breast-feeding. Stay on the safe side and avoid use.

❌Bleeding disorders: Clove oil contains a chemical called eugenol that seems to slow blood clotting. There is a concern that taking clove oil might cause bleeding in people with bleeding disorders.

❌Surgery: Clove oil contains a chemical called eugenol that seems to slow blood clotting. There is a concern that it might cause bleeding during or after surgery. Stop using clove at least 2 weeks before a scheduled surgery.

📌Advice: Very small quantity is required for each use. Measure ground cloves in pinches or teaspoon. Alternatively, add 1 or 2 single cloves to other spices such Cinnamon, Ginger, ude, Turmeric,ehuru and blend with a grinder.  👌Remember that the longer the spice is allowed to infuse, the stronger the flavour that develops.
